The MTh specialising in Pastoral Family Therapy (Coursework) is a master's degree offered by the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Pretoria. This programme provides students with the opportunity for theological specialisation and research at the master's level.
Programme Information
This programme offers students with a four-year BDiv, a BThHons, or an equivalent qualification the chance to acquire specialist skills in the practical field of Ministry through coursework modules.
Admission Requirements
General Admission Regulations
All applications must be accompanied by certified full academic transcripts, a certified copy of ID or passport, and a research concept note (not applicable to honours or coursework master's degrees). International applicants must also submit a SAQA evaluation of their completed qualification and TOEFL or IELTS test results if applicable.
Minimum Admissions Requirements
- A relevant honours degree (at least NQF level 8) or a relevant four-year bachelor's degree (at least NQF level 8).
- A weighted average of at least 65% at final-year level.
- An average of at least 65% is required for an admissions examination.
Additional Requirements
For the MTh in Pastoral Family Therapy, prospective students are required to do an admission test to determine academic merits and therapeutic potential. The student must apply before the end of October with the Department of Practical Theology for admission to the programme the following academic year. A reading list will be provided in preparation for an admission examination early in the new academic year.
Examinations and Pass Requirements
- A master's degree is conferred on a student by virtue of an examination, or an examination and a dissertation, or an examination and a mini-dissertation.
- These examinations can be written or oral.
- A subminimum of 50% is required in the examination. At least 50% is required as a pass mark for the mini-dissertation or dissertation.
Research Information
Mini-dissertation
The proposed title of the mini-dissertation must be submitted for approval to the Research Committee via the Supervisor and the relevant head of department before a student may commence with the research.
Article for Publication
Unless Senate decides otherwise, a student, before or on submission of a dissertation, must submit at least one draft article for publication in a recognised academic journal.
Pass with Distinction
To pass with distinction, a weighted average (GPA) of at least 75% in the examination of the coursework and 75% for the mini-dissertation must be obtained.
