Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts specialising in Law programme is designed to meet specific training needs that emerge from the demand for employees with specific legal knowledge, but who are also schooled in aspects of the social or human sciences. This multidisciplinary programme aims to train students as law practitioners with a broader academic background, to provide an alternative route to obtaining a Bachelor of Laws, to provide versatile training in both law and the social sciences or humanities, to improve students' insight into the extent, consequences and handling of national and global issues, and to academically equip students for a career in which research, decision-making and reporting on law-related issues are important requirements.

Programme Details

• The programme is full-time, with specific modules offered after hours.
• The Faculty of Humanities provides a holistic education, transferable skills, critical thinking, and communication and problem-solving that will help students develop to their full potential.
• The faculty offers an exciting and comprehensive range of programmes and discipline-based majors, including studies in languages, social sciences, and visual and performing arts.

Career Opportunities

• Lawyer (A Bachelor of Arts specialising in Law degree and a Bachelor of Laws degree are required.)

Admission Requirements

Minimum Requirements

• Achievement level: English Home Language or English First Additional Language - 5
• APS (Grade 11): 34
• APS (NSC/IEB completed): 34
• To retain admission, candidates must obtain an APS of at least 34 in the NSC/IEB.
• Life Orientation is excluded when calculating the APS.
• Applicants currently in Grade 12 must apply with their final Grade 11 (or equivalent) results.
• Applicants who have completed Grade 12 must apply with their final NSC or equivalent qualification results.
• Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee admission.

Application Process

• Successful candidates will be notified once admitted or conditionally admitted.
• Unsuccessful candidates will be notified after 30 June.
• Applicants should check their application status regularly.

Transfer and Returning Students

• A transferring student is a student who, at the time of applying at the University of Pretoria, is/was a registered student at another tertiary institution.
• A transferring student will be considered for admission based on NSC or equivalent qualification and previous academic performance.
• A returning student is a student who, at the time of application for a degree programme, is/was a registered student at UP, and wants to transfer to another degree at UP.
• A returning student will be considered for admission based on NSC or equivalent qualification and previous academic performance.

Programme Duration

• The minimum duration of the programme is 3 years, full-time.
