BEng in Industrial Engineering 5-year Programme

Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology

The BEng in Industrial Engineering 5-year programme is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to analyze, design, plan, implement, operate, manage, and maintain integrated systems. These systems consist of people, capital, materials, equipment, information, and energy, and are aimed at increasing productivity.


Programme Information

Industrial engineers integrate the contributions of all other engineering disciplines into a final, functional, and marketable product or service. Graduates are employed in various sectors, including service, manufacturing, information technology, finance, agriculture, government, logistics, consulting, education, and more. Typical activities of an industrial engineer include:


  • Designing, implementing, and managing production processes and equipment
  • Designing and improving plant layout
  • Designing and improving business processes
  • Functional design and implementation of information systems
  • Developing and implementing performance criteria and standards
  • Providing support with decision-making
  • Scheduling activities
  • Analyzing systems with the aid of mathematical and simulation models
  • Undertaking economic evaluations of alternatives
  • Integrating new systems into an existing environment

The ideal candidate should possess problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, project management skills, and communication and organization skills.


Career Opportunities

Industrial engineers design, test, implement, and manage a wide range of man/machine systems for production and the delivery of services. Organizational matters that require optimization include site selection and layout of facilities, manufacturing, inventory control, materials handling, supply chain management, quality management, cost control, financial services, maintenance, reliability, computer simulation, information systems, human resources, and business law.

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements for the BEng in Industrial Engineering 5-year programme are as follows:


  • Achievement level: English Home Language or English First Additional Language: 5, Mathematics: 65%, Physical Sciences: 65%
  • APS: 33
  • Life Orientation is excluded when calculating the APS
  • Applicants currently in Grade 12 must apply with their final Grade 11 results
  • Applicants who have completed Grade 12 must apply with their final NSC or equivalent qualification results
  • Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee admission

Minimum Duration

The minimum duration of the BEng in Industrial Engineering 5-year programme is 5 years, full-time.

Transferring Students

A transferring student is a student who, at the time of applying at the University of Pretoria, is/was a registered student at another tertiary institution. A transferring student will be considered for admission based on NSC or equivalent qualification and previous academic performance.


Returning Students

A returning student is a student who, at the time of application for a degree programme, is/was a registered student at UP, and wants to transfer to another degree at UP. A returning student will be considered for admission based on NSC or equivalent qualification and previous academic performance.
