Introduction to the BSc in Meteorology Programme
The Bachelor of Science in Meteorology programme is designed to focus on the study of atmospheric processes. This programme is ideal for individuals who are fascinated by weather phenomena and have a strong interest in natural science.
Programme Information
The BSc in Meteorology programme is the only one of its kind offered in South Africa and the SADC region. Upon successful completion of the BScHons in Meteorology degree, students are regarded as Class 1 Meteorologists by the World Meteorological Organisation. The BScHons in Meteorology degree complies fully with the Manual on the Implementation of Education and Training Standards in Meteorology and Hydrology Volume I Meteorology.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the BSc in Meteorology programme can pursue careers as weather forecasters, researchers, climatologists, and lecturers. Meteorologists are employed by institutions involved in the study, interpretation, and prediction of weather, atmospheric science, and phenomena relating to the climate. These institutions include the South African Weather Service, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, universities, agricultural institutions, municipalities, consultants, and industries.
Faculty Notes
All modules in the programme are presented in English, which is the University's official language of tuition, communication, and correspondence. The Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences is home to over 6,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students and presents degrees in fields ranging from actuaries to zoologists.
Admission Requirements
The admission requirements for the BSc in Meteorology programme include:
- Achievement level of 5 in English Home Language or English First Additional Language
- Achievement level of 5 in Mathematics
- Achievement level of 5 in Physical Sciences
- An APS of 34 Life Orientation is excluded when calculating the APS. Applicants currently in Grade 12 must apply with their final Grade 11 results, while those who have completed Grade 12 must apply with their final NSC or equivalent qualification results.
Minimum Duration
The minimum duration of the BSc in Meteorology programme is 3 years, full-time.
Closing Dates
The closing dates for applications are:
- 29 January 2026 for South African students
- 17 August 2025 for international students
Additional Information
Students who have been excluded or dismissed from other institutions due to poor academic performance will not be considered for admission to the University of Pretoria. Returning students will be considered for admission based on their NSC or equivalent qualification and previous academic performance.
