Program Overview


PhD in Learning Support, Guidance and Counselling

The PhD in Learning Support, Guidance and Counselling is a highly competitive program with a rigorous selection process. Due to the limited number of available positions, applicants must undergo a thorough evaluation.


Admission Requirements

To be considered for the program, applicants must submit the following:


  • A complete academic record
  • An acceptable research proposal in a theme that falls within the research foci of the Department
  • Evaluation certificate from the South African Qualifications Authority (for non-South African qualifications)

Program Details

  • Medium of presentation (language): English
  • Entry requirements:
    • A MEd degree other than in Educational Psychology, or a qualification considered as equivalent by the Dean
    • A mark of at least 60% for the master's dissertation
    • Computer literacy
  • Basic requirements and duration of the PhD programme:
    • Successful completion of a research proposal and presentation in the Department during the first year of registration
    • Attendance of research support sessions on four occasions during the first year of registration, usually presented during school holidays
    • Preparation and submission of an article to an accredited journal
    • Completion of the study within three years after the first year of registration

Research Opportunities

Selected students are encouraged to conduct research within one of the broader research projects in the Department, or as part of research projects undertaken by the Centre for the Study of Resilience, which resides in the Department.
