Program Overview


Programme: PGCHE

The Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) is a one-year programme offered by the Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria.


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the PGCHE programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:


  • A bachelor's degree from a recognised university
  • A National Diploma
  • A National Senior Certificate with admission to degree studies as well as another M+3 qualification and appropriate experience deemed adequate by the Dean for admission to the programme Students who do not comply with the admission requirements (M+3) may follow the "recognition of prior learning (RPL)" route by submitting a portfolio containing a record of their work-related experience.

Programme Structure

The PGCHE programme consists of 120 credits, which must be completed within one year. The programme includes:


  • Fundamental modules
  • Core modules
  • Elective modules

Fundamental Modules

  • LMD 400: Mediating Learning 400 (30 credits)
    • Module content: The function of mediator of learning and facilitator of learning as central role of the higher education practitioner.
  • PFO 400: Professional Development 400 (20 credits)
    • Module content: Professional development of higher education practitioners, including self-assessment and developing a professional portfolio.

Core Modules

  • ASK 410: Assessment Practice 410 (10 credits)
    • Module content: Methods of assessment in a formative and summative fashion, including basic principles of accountable assessment.
  • GBL 420: Community-Based Learning 420 (10 credits)
    • Module content: National policies on higher education and community service, including programme characteristics and developing infrastructure for community service.
  • KRO 410: Curriculum Development 410 (10 credits)
    • Module content: Exploring models and principles of curriculum development, including adapting principles to comply with outcomes-based curriculum development.
  • LAM 420: Leadership and Management 420 (10 credits)
    • Module content: The role and profile of the teacher, including leadership, administration, and management.
  • OWT 410: Education Technology 410 (10 credits)
    • Module content: Media as sources of learning, including developing and utilising media by learners.

Elective Modules

  • CEL 420: Electronic Learning 420 (10 credits)
    • Module content: Electronic learning media, including integrating electronic media in practice.
  • EPP 430: Entrepreneurship Practice 430 (10 credits)
    • Module content: The role of education and training in entrepreneurship, including finance, marketing, and project management.
  • MEP 420: Mentorship 420 (10 credits)
    • Module content: Principles of mentorship, including strategies and practice.
  • NSV 420: Research Supervision 420 (10 credits)
    • Module content: Supervision of postgraduate students, including research design and supervisory process.

Pass with Distinction

The certificate is awarded with distinction to a student who has obtained an average of at least 75%, with a minimum of 70% in each module. All "Fundamental" and "Core" modules must be selected together with two "Elective" modules.
