Program Overview
Programme: BEd Intermediate Phase Teaching
The BEd Intermediate Phase Teaching programme is a four-year degree that aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become effective teachers in the intermediate phase.
Admission Requirements
The following persons will be considered for admission:
- A candidate who is in possession of a certificate that is deemed by the University to be equivalent to the required Grade 12 certificate with university endorsement.
- A candidate who is a graduate from another tertiary institution or has been granted the status of a graduate of such an institution.
- A candidate who is a graduate of another faculty at the University of Pretoria.
Minimum Requirements
- Achievement level: NSC/IEB - 4, HIGCSE - 3, AS-Level - D, A-Level - D
- Afrikaans or English: 30 APS points
- Prospective students with an APS of 26-29 must write the National Benchmark Test (NBT).

Methodology of Elective Modules
Students choose two methodologies in accordance with the elective modules chosen, one of which must be the chosen language methodology.
Class Attendance
Class attendance is compulsory for all student teachers for the full duration of the training period specified by SAQA.
Programme Delivery
The programme consists of a university-based learning component and a school-based learning component.
Examinations and Pass Requirements
- Special examinations: A third-year student who has failed a maximum of four semester modules or the equivalent thereof, with a final mark of at least 40% in each, may be admitted by the Dean to a special examination in those modules during January of the following year.
- Pass with distinction: The degree is conferred with distinction to a student who obtains an overall weighted average (GPA) of 75% or higher in the BEd programme.
Minimum Credits
The minimum number of credits required for each year of study is 170.
