Program Overview

Programme Overview

The BEng Civil Engineering Engage programme is an extended degree programme with a five-year curriculum. It is designed to enable students who show academic potential but do not meet the normal entry requirements for the four-year degree programme to obtain an Engineering degree.

Programme Information

  • The programme is offered by the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology.
  • The minimum duration of study is 5 years, with a total of 680 credits.
  • Students must register for the entire programme, not components of it. The curriculum is fixed; there are no electives.
  • Attendance at all components of years 1 to 3 of the programme is compulsory.

Promotion to Next Study Year

Promotion to the Second Semester of the First Year and to the Second Year of Study

  1. A new first-year student who has failed in all the prescribed modules of the programme at the end of the first semester is excluded from studies in the School of Engineering.
  2. A student who complies with all the requirements of the first year of study is promoted to the second year of study.
  3. A student who has not passed at least 70% of the credits of the first year of study after the November examinations must reapply for admission.

Promotion to the Third Year of Study

  1. A student who complies with all the requirements of the second year of study is promoted to the third year of study.
  2. A student must pass all the prescribed modules at first year level before being admitted to any module at third year level.

Promotion to the Fourth Year of Study

  1. A student who complies with all the requirements of the third year of study is promoted to the fourth year of study.
  2. A student must pass all the prescribed modules of the second year of study before being admitted to any module of the fourth year of study.

Pass with Distinction

A student graduates with distinction if no module of the third or fourth year of study of the four-year programme or of the fourth or fifth year of the ENGAGE programme was repeated, and a weighted average of at least 75% was obtained in one year in all the modules of the final year of study.

Core Modules

The programme includes a wide range of core modules across different years of study, including but not limited to:

  • Fundamental modules such as Academic Orientation and Mathematics.
  • Core modules in the first year like General Chemistry, Physics, and Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Modules in subsequent years covering topics such as Electricity and Electronics, Materials Science, Mechanics, Structural Analysis, and more.

Research Project

In the final year, students are required to undertake a research project, which involves analytical and/or experimental research under the supervision of an academic staff member.

Practical Training

Students undergo at least 6 weeks of prescribed training in the industry, which provides them with practical experience and exposure to real-world engineering challenges.

Minimum Credits

The minimum credits required for each year of study vary, with a total of 680 credits needed to complete the programme.

General Regulations

The General Regulations (G Regulations) of the University of Pretoria apply to all faculties. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with these regulations and the information contained in the General Rules section.
