Introduction to the MBChB Programme

The MBChB programme is a six-year undergraduate degree that aims to produce competent and compassionate medical professionals. Admission Requirements

  • National Senior Certificate with admission to degree studies
  • Minimum APS score of 35
  • Achievement level of 5 in English, Mathematics, and Physical Science
  • Achievement level of 5 in two other subjects

Additional Requirements

  • International students must meet the minimum admission requirements for their country
  • Students with disabilities must provide documentation of their disability and may be required to undergo a medical assessment
  • Students who have been convicted of a crime or have a criminal record must provide documentation of their conviction and may be required to undergo a medical assessment

Examinations and Pass Requirements

  • Students must pass all modules and examinations to progress to the next year of study
  • The pass mark for each module is 50%
  • Students who fail a module or examination may be required to repeat the module or examination

Promotion to Next Study Year

  • Students must pass all modules and examinations to be promoted to the next year of study
  • Students who fail a module or examination may be required to repeat the module or examination before being promoted

Graduation Requirements

  • Students must complete all six years of study and pass all modules and examinations
  • Students must also complete a research project and present a final thesis
  • The degree is conferred with distinction on students who achieve an average of 75% or higher in the final year of study.

Student Intern Complex (SIC)

  • The SIC is a 18-month training programme that takes place in the final two years of study
  • Students rotate through various medical specialties and gain practical experience in patient care
  • The SIC is a compulsory component of the MBChB programme and students must complete all rotations to graduate.

Elective Modules

  • Students may choose to complete elective modules in addition to the compulsory modules
  • Elective modules are available in a range of subjects, including medical research, medical education, and medical leadership
  • Students must meet the prerequisites for each elective module and may be required to complete additional assessments or examinations.

Longitudinal Clinic Attachment Programme (L-CAS)

  • The L-CAS programme is a four-year programme that takes place in the first four years of study
  • Students are attached to a clinic and gain practical experience in patient care
  • The L-CAS programme is a compulsory component of the MBChB programme and students must complete all rotations to graduate.
