Programme Information
The MMed Obstetrics and Gynaecology programme is offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria. The programme is designed to provide advanced training in obstetrics and gynaecology, with a focus on research and clinical practice.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the MMed Obstetrics and Gynaecology programme, applicants must:
- Hold an MBChB degree from the University of Pretoria or a qualification deemed equivalent by the University.
- Be registered as a physician with the Health Professions Council of South Africa for at least one year.
- International students must have their qualifications verified by SAQA.
Programme Structure
The programme consists of a minimum duration of study of 4 years, with a total of 624 credits. The programme includes:
- A research component, which requires students to submit a dissertation or a research article that has been accepted for publication in a subsidised periodical.
- A clinical component, which requires students to complete a minimum of 4 years of full-time training in an approved registrar post.
- A theoretical component, which includes a range of modules such as anatomy, physiology, and obstetrics and gynaecology.

Examinations and Pass Requirements
The programme includes a range of examinations, including written, oral, and clinical exams. Students must achieve a minimum final mark of 50% to pass each subject, and a subminimum of 50% in the clinical section of the examination.
Exemption
The Faculty Board may grant partial exemption from the training and work requirements on the grounds of comparable training and experience completed in another post or at another recognised institution.
Pass with Distinction
The degree is conferred with distinction on a student who has obtained a final mark of at least 75% in their major subject.
General Information
The programme is designed to provide advanced training in obstetrics and gynaecology, with a focus on research and clinical practice. Students are expected to participate increasingly in the examining and treatment of patients in the hospital, both in-patients and out-patients, as well as performing and interpreting tests in the laboratory (where applicable).
