Program Overview


Programme: MChD Prosthodontics

The MChD Prosthodontics programme is a four-year full-time degree offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria.


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the MChD degree programme, a candidate must:


  • Hold the BChD degree of the University of Pretoria or an equivalent qualification, or be admitted to master's degree studies in terms of the stipulations of General Regulations G.1.3 and G.62.
  • Be registered as a dentist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa in the category Independent Practice.

For the MChD degree (endorsement Maxillofacial Surgery Medical or Dental), a candidate:


  • Must have obtained the BChD and/or MBChB degree or equivalent qualification at least one year previously.
  • Must have passed the Advanced Trauma Life Support Course (maximum three attempts), as well as the basic subjects Anatomy 870, Physiology 806, and Pharmacology 809, and the PGDipDent (Oral Surgery), with a minimum pass mark of 65% in the major subject.
  • Must be registered as a dentist and/or physician with the Health Professions Council of South Africa in the category Independent Practice.

For the MChD degrees (Orthodontics, Periodontics, and Oral Medicine, and Prosthodontics), a candidate is required to pass all the basic subjects before being admitted to the first year of study. The required basic subjects are:


  • For Orthodontics: Anatomy 871, Physiology 806
  • For Periodontics and Oral Medicine: Anatomy 873, Physiology 806, General pathology 808, and Oral biology 800
  • For Prosthodontics: Anatomy 874, Physiology 806, and Oral biology 800

Examinations and Pass Requirements

  • A student must pass all the basic subjects before being admitted to the first year of study.
  • Admission to the examination in the major subject is determined by the head of department.
  • The final exit examination of the major subjects will be administered by the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.
  • Only candidates who have met all the requirements for the MChD degree, except for the major subject (final examination), will be allowed to write the College examination (exit examination).
  • The student must submit and pass a dissertation on an approved topic related to the major subject and submit a manuscript for publication as required.

Exemption

Exemption may be granted by the Dean, on the recommendation of the Head of Department, by virtue of comparable training and/or experience in terms of the requirements of School Regulations. However, exemption from the examination and evaluation in the major subject may not be granted.


Pass with Distinction

A student who obtains a final mark of at least 75% (with the first attempt) in the major subject qualifies to obtain the degree with distinction. An MChD student who has obtained at least 75% with the first attempt in both the major subject and the dissertation will receive the degree with distinction.
