Programme: MMed Clinical Pathology
Programme Information
The MMed Clinical Pathology programme is offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria.
- The programme consists of a minimum duration of study of 5 years, with a total of 576 credits at NQF level 9.
- All MMed students must register for and attend Applied Research Methodology 802 satisfactorily.
- All MMed students must submit a dissertation or a research article that has been accepted for publication in a subsidised periodical.
- The research proposal must be approved by the MMed Protocol Committee prior to the intermediate exam.
Admission Requirements
- An MBChB degree or a qualification deemed equivalent by the University for at least two years.
- Registration as a physician with the Health Professions Council of South Africa for at least one year.
- International students must have their qualifications verified by SAQA.
Other Programme-Specific Information
- The duration of training is five years, with at least 18 months in each major subject.
- A "major subject" refers to the recognised field of study in Medicine in which the student specialises.
Examinations and Pass Requirements
- The sequence of examinations in prerequisite subjects will be determined by the head of the department.
- A minimum final mark of 50% is required to pass in a subject, and a subminimum of 50% in the clinical section of the examination.
- General Regulations apply.
Exemption
- The Faculty Board may grant partial exemption from training and work on the grounds of comparable training and experience.
- Exemption from a maximum period of 18 months may be granted for four-year and five-year programmes.
Pass with Distinction
- The degree is conferred with distinction on a student who has obtained a final mark of at least 75% in their major subject.
General Information
- Registrars are expected to participate in the examining and treatment of patients, as well as performing and interpreting tests in the laboratory.
- Lectures and discussions are organised, including those with closely related departments.
