Program Overview
Programme: MChD Periodontics and Oral Medicine
The MChD Periodontics and Oral Medicine programme is a four-year degree offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria. The programme is designed to provide advanced training in periodontics and oral medicine, with a strong focus on research and clinical practice.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for admission to the programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- BChD (or equivalent) degree
- Registration as a dentist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in the category Independent Practice
Examinations and Pass Requirements
The examination and evaluation in the major subject are determined by the relevant head of department. To pass the programme, students must meet the following requirements:
- Pass all prerequisite subjects
- Complete all applicable training as prescribed by the relevant head of department
- Complete the required research component for the degree
- Submit and pass a dissertation on an approved topic related to the major subject
- Submit a manuscript for publication as required
Exemption
Exemption may be granted by the Dean, on the recommendation of the relevant head of department, by virtue of comparable training and/or experience in terms of the requirements of School Regulations.
Pass with Distinction
A student who obtains a final mark of at least 75% (with the first attempt) in the major subject qualifies to obtain the degree with distinction. An MChD student who has obtained at least 75% with the first attempt in both their major subject and the dissertation will receive the degree with distinction.

Programme Structure
The programme is structured over four years, with a minimum duration of study of four years. The total credits for the programme are 480, and the NQF level is 09.
