Programme Information
The MChD (Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery) programme is offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of School of Dentistry. The programme consists of a minimum duration of study of 6 years, with a total of 1088 credits at NQF level 09.
Admission Requirements
- BChD (or equivalent) degree
- Registration as a dentist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in the category Independent Practice
Additional Requirements
- The student must also register for the MBChB degree and apply for registration as a student in Medicine with the Health Professions Council of South Africa in the second year of study.
Other Programme-Specific Information
- A candidate must hold a full-time registrarship for a minimum of four years (for a candidate with both a BChD degree and a MBChB degree), a minimum of seven years (for a candidate with a BChD degree), a minimum of six years (for a candidate with a MBChB degree), or a minimum of five years (for MChD (ChirMaxFac-Dent)).
- The programme includes practical and clinical training, supplemented by seminars, discussions, papers, and research.
Examinations and Pass Requirements
- Examinations in the basic subjects (Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology) must be passed before admission to the first year of study.
- A minimum pass mark of at least 50% is required in all examinations for the University of Pretoria and College of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery.
- Examinations in the subsidiary subjects (Principles of Surgery and Applied Oral Pathology) must be passed before proceeding with the programme.
- A student who fails any of the subsidiary subjects may be admitted to a second examination.
Exemption
Exemption may be granted by the Dean, on the recommendation of the relevant head of department, by virtue of comparable training and/or experience in terms of the requirements of School Regulations.
Pass with Distinction
A student who obtains a final mark of at least 75% (on the first attempt) in the major subject qualifies to obtain the degree with distinction.
General Information
- The content of the basic subjects, subsidiary subjects, and attendance courses will be determined by the relevant head of department in consultation with the head of the department at Dentistry or Medicine.
- Students must ensure that certificates of satisfactory preparation are acquired in all the attendance courses.
Major Subject: Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery
Experience is acquired through practical and clinical training and supplemented by seminars, discussions, papers, and research. Diagnosis, planning, surgical, and secondary treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects of the human mouth, jaws, face, and related structures.
Subsidiary (Intermediary) Subject: Principles of Surgery
Instruction mainly by the departments of Surgery (and its divisions), Neurosurgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, and Family Medicine. This training takes place over nine months.
