Program Overview
Programme: MPH
The Master's in Public Health (MPH) programme is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of public health principles and practices. The programme comprises three components: core modules, elective modules, and a mini-dissertation.
Programme Information
The curriculum includes four compulsory modules and a range of elective modules, with a blended learning approach that combines online, distance-based learning, and face-to-face teaching modalities. The MPH programme consists of:
- Core modules (30 credits)
- Elective modules (50 credits)
- Mini-dissertation (100 credits)
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the MPH programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- PGDip (Public Health) or equivalent with an average of at least 60%
- Relevant honours degree
- Relevant four-year bachelor's degree and at least two years' applicable practical (work) experience
- Relevant three-year bachelor's degree and at least five years' applicable practical (work) experience
Additional Requirements
- Registration as a special student in the Faculty to pass a status examination may be required in certain instances.
- A minimum mark of 60% must be obtained in the status examination.
- The status examination will be written in June.
Other Programme-Specific Information
- All MMed students must register for and attend Applied Research Methodology (TNM 800) satisfactorily.
- Students must consult the General Academic Regulations G30-G41.
Examinations and Pass Requirements
- Students must participate in all activities and successfully complete all written and/or online tasks.
- Written, oral, and/or practical examinations must be passed in each prescribed and elective module.
- The minimum pass mark for modules and the dissertation is 50%.
- A second examination in a module may be granted if a student obtains less than 50% and more than 39%.
Research Information
- A research protocol must be submitted to the student's division head for internal review and then to the Faculty of Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee for approval.
- No data collection may begin until the Research Ethics Committee has approved the protocol.
- A mini-dissertation on an approved research project must be passed.
Pass with Distinction
The MPH degree is awarded with distinction to a student who has obtained a mark of at least 75% for the dissertation and a simple average of at least 75% for the other required modules.
General Information
- Concurrent registration for two study programmes is not allowed, except in cases of exceptional academic achievement, and requires the permission of the Dean.
- The School of Health Systems and Public Health states that concurrent registration for two study programmes is a privilege and not a right.
