Programme Information
The Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria has been offering programmes in a distance education delivery mode for several years. This programme is designed to meet the training needs of teaching staff in South Africa, and it is presented in a distance education mode, supported by academic contact sessions.
Admission Requirements
- Relevant bachelor's degree and a relevant Teacher's Diploma (e.g., BA + HED)
- Relevant bachelor's degree and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education
- Relevant four-year bachelor's degree in Education (e.g., BEd)
- Relevant M+4 Teacher's Diploma and relevant Advanced Diploma in Education

Core Modules
EDS 733: Philosophy and social imperatives of education
This module explores meta-theories in education, empiricism, rational empiricism, critical rationalism, critical theory, phenomenology, hermeneutics, system theory, and philosophies in education. It also examines the influence of modernism and postmodernism on education and sociological imperatives for education.
NMQ 734: Educational research methodology
This module covers the nature of educational enquiry, research ethics, truth, rationality, subjectivity, and objectivity. It also explores quantitative and qualitative modes of enquiry, research designs, and data collection techniques.
CDD 733: Curriculum development
This module focuses on the principles and foundations of curriculum/programme design and development, international and national models and trends in curriculum/programme development, and principles of outcomes-based programming in the SAQA context.
LVO 733: Management and leadership in education
This module introduces education management, process and models, management as a function to ensure effective task execution in schools, and leadership in education.
ELP 733: Education law and policy
This module aims to equip students with intellectual, academic, and literacy skills in the fields of Education Law and Policy. It prepares students for further studies in these fields and enhances their professional development.
NMQ 735: Research proposal
This module involves guided literature research, formulation of a conceptual framework, and development of a research proposal for a supervised research project of limited scope.
EDM 733: Education management
This module provides theoretical and practical approaches to financial and human resources management within the school environment. It explores aspects of budgets, strategic management and governance, asset management, recruitment and selection of staff, performance management, and continuous professional development.
WEM 782: Research report
This module involves a supervised research project of limited scope, research proposal development, use of quantitative and/or qualitative methods, and writing a research report.
Examinations and Pass Requirements
Examinations take place twice a year, and students must register for examinations as stipulated under faculty-specific regulations. A final mark of at least 50% is required to pass a module.
Research Information
A research project is compulsory and must be prepared according to the requirements of the specific department and submitted for assessment. Both assignments for the project are compulsory, and the project will contribute 70% towards the final mark.
Pass with Distinction
The degree is conferred with distinction on a student who has obtained an average of at least 75%, with a minimum of 70% in each module.
General Academic Regulations and Student Rules
The General Academic Regulations (G Regulations) and General Student Rules apply to all faculties and registered students of the University. Students must familiarize themselves with these regulations, as well as the relevant faculty-specific and programme-specific regulations and information.
