Program Overview


Programme: MEd in Educational Psychology (Coursework)

The MEd in Educational Psychology (Coursework) is a postgraduate programme offered by the Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria.


Programme Information

The programme includes practical work that enables students to comply with the requirements for registration as an Educational Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. The closing date for applications is 31 July, and selection takes place in August. Students are provisionally selected during the formal selection process in August, with finalisation of selection taking place in the following June.


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:


  • A relevant Bachelor of Education degree majoring in Psychology and an honours degree in Educational Psychology
  • A Bachelor of Psychology degree
  • A Bachelor's degree majoring in Psychology and Education, and an honours degree in Educational Psychology
  • A cumulative weighted average of at least 65% for the Bachelor of Psychology degree or a weighted average of at least 65% for the honours degree

Other Programme-Specific Information

  • Renewal of registration after the two-year period is permitted only under special circumstances.
  • Students will be granted two opportunities to pass NMQ 801; unsuccessful candidates will not be allowed to continue with the programme.

Research Information

All master's students must submit a dissertation or a mini-dissertation and pass Research Proposal (NMQ 801). The dissertation must be on a topic approved by the Dean, following the approval of a complete research proposal. A literature study is not acceptable.

  • NMQ 800: Research Proposal (30 credits)
    • Module content: Development of a research proposal, research methodology, overview and principles of quantitative and qualitative research methodology.

Core Modules

  • BOP 805: Career Counselling (10 credits)
    • Module content: Theory and application of career counselling, addressing contemporary Global South inequality issues.
  • ODD 875: Educational Psychology Assessment for Learning and Development (10 credits)
    • Module content: Fundamental approaches concerning barriers to learning, theoretical frameworks for diagnostic assessment.
  • ODH 875: Educational Psychological Learning Support (10 credits)
    • Module content: Learning support in Southern Africa, application of theories for learning support.
  • ODK 895: Mini-Dissertation (60 credits)
    • Module content: Educational Psychology dissertation of limited scope.
  • OPG 805: Educational Psychology Pathways to Emotional and Behavioural Wellbeing (10 credits)
    • Module content: The educational psychologist within a multi-cultural post-colonial context.
  • OPR 801: Educational Psychology Practice (40 credits)
    • Module content: Practical application of educational psychological assessment and support.
  • OUB 805: Family-Oriented Intervention (10 credits)
    • Module content: Diversity in families, family life cycle development, parameters of family functioning.

Pass with Distinction

The MEd degree with coursework is conferred with distinction on a student who obtains 75% in the mini-dissertation and an average of 75% in the remaining modules.
