Program Overview


Programme Overview

The University of Pretoria offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree with an option in Sport and Recreation Management. This three-year full-time programme is designed for individuals interested in careers within the sport and leisure industries.


Programme Information

This programme provides students with a broad knowledge base, enabling them to understand and manage the potential, promise, possibilities, and power of contemporary globalized sport and leisure. Students are guided towards specialization in areas such as sports management, sports psychology, sport and leisure in society, or sports coaching sciences. The programme prepares graduates for employment in public or private sectors, including commercialized and professional sport, sports development, community development, and mass participation.


Admission Requirements

  • Candidates who achieved an APS of 30 in Grade 11 and comply with the minimum subject requirements and achievement levels will automatically be granted placement, subject to space availability.
  • To retain admission, learners must obtain an APS of at least 28 in Grade 12.
  • The Faculty of Humanities will consider students with an APS of 27 in Grade 12, depending on space availability and NBT results.
  • Life Orientation is excluded when calculating the APS.
  • Minimum requirements for 2016 include an achievement level of 5 in Afrikaans or English.

Programme Structure

The programme consists of fundamental, core, and elective modules. Fundamental modules include Academic Information Management, Academic Literacy, and Introduction to Literature in English. Core modules cover Foundations of Recreation and Sports Management, Leadership in Sport and Recreation, and Sport in Society. Elective modules offer a range of options, including Afrikaans, English, French, German, History, and Sociology.


Core Modules

Core modules for each year of study are outlined as follows:


  • Year 1: Foundations of Recreation and Sports Management, Leadership in Sport and Recreation, Sport in Society, and Introduction to Literature in English.
  • Year 2: Sports Facility and Event Management, Business and Governance of Sport, Fundamentals of Human Movement, and Motor Behaviour.
  • Year 3: Economics of Sport and Leisure, Value-Based Decision-Making in Sport and Recreation, Sport and Leisure in Community Development, and Sport, Recreation, and Social Change.

Elective Modules

Elective modules are available in various disciplines, including languages (Afrikaans, English, French, German, isiNdebele, Sepedi, Setswana, isiZulu), History, Sociology, and others. These modules allow students to tailor their degree to their interests and career goals.


Academic Literacy

The academic literacy of all students is assessed at the start of the academic year. Students who are deemed to be at risk of their level of academic literacy are required to take specific modules to improve their skills.


Minimum Credits

The minimum number of credits required for each year of study is as follows:


  • Year 1: 138 credits
  • Year 2: 150 credits
  • Year 3: 120 credits
