Program Overview


Programme Overview

The BA Sport and Leisure Studies Sport and Recreation Management programme is a three-year full-time course aimed at individuals interested in careers within the sport and leisure industries. This programme provides a broad knowledge base, enabling graduates to understand and manage the potential, promise, possibilities, and power of contemporary globalised sport and leisure.


Programme Information

This programme guides students towards specialisation in areas such as sports management, sports psychology, sport and leisure in society, or sports coaching sciences. Upon completion, graduates will possess fundamental and functional management competencies to manage sport and recreation environments and organisations. Potential employment opportunities include sports managers, recreation and corporate wellness managers, school sports managers, sports marketers, sports entrepreneurs, and educators in Business Studies (with Marketing Management as an elective) in secondary education, following the completion of a PGCE.


Admission Requirements

  • Candidates with a certificate deemed equivalent to the required Grade 12 certificate with university endorsement are considered for admission.
  • Graduates from other tertiary institutions or those granted graduate status from such institutions are also eligible.
  • Candidates who achieved an APS of 30 in Grade 11 and meet the minimum subject requirements and achievement levels will automatically be granted placement, subject to space availability.
  • To retain admission, learners must obtain an APS of at least 28 in Grade 12.
  • The Admission Committee of the Faculty of Humanities considers students with an APS of 27 in Grade 12, depending on space availability and NBT results.
  • Life Orientation is excluded when calculating the APS.

Academic Literacy

The academic literacy of all students is assessed at the start of the academic year. Students identified as being at risk are compelled to obtain at least 12 credits in academic literacy modules. Those not at risk must obtain at least 12 credits in language modules.


Notes

  • Students must obtain an accredited Level 0/1 Coaching Certificate in one sport of choice at their own cost.
  • Students must obtain a Community Recreation Leader Certificate in YSL 110 at their own cost.
  • The department makes arrangements for the Community Recreation Leader Certificate.
