Programme Overview
The BA Sport and Leisure Studies programme is a three-year full-time course aimed at individuals interested in careers within the sport and leisure industries. This programme provides a broad knowledge base, enabling graduates to understand and develop skills to interrogate, create, promote, lead, and manage the potential, promise, possibilities, and power of contemporary globalised sport and leisure.
Programme Information
This programme is designed to guide students towards specialisation in areas such as sports management, sports psychology, sport and leisure in society, or sports coaching sciences. It prepares graduates for employment in public or private sectors in contexts of commercialised and professional sport, sports development, community development, and mass participation, sports coaching, and facilitating psycho-social wellness through sport and leisure.
Admission Requirements
- Candidates considered for admission include those in possession of a certificate deemed equivalent to the required Grade 12 certificate with university endorsement.
- Graduates from another tertiary institution or those granted graduate status from such an institution are also considered.
- Candidates who comply with minimum subject requirements and achievement levels, as well as APS requirements, will be granted placement subject to space availability.

Programme Structure
The programme consists of fundamental, core, and elective modules. Fundamental modules include Academic Information Management, Academic Literacy, and Introduction to Sociology. Core modules cover foundations of recreation and sports management, leadership in sport and recreation, and sport in society, among others. Elective modules offer a range of options including languages (Afrikaans, English, German, French, isiNdebele, Sepedi, Setswana, isiZulu), Historical and Heritage Studies, and Modern European Languages.

Academic Literacy
All students in the Faculty of Humanities who are identified as being at risk in terms of their level of academic literacy are compelled to obtain at least 12 credits in the academic literacy modules. Students not at risk must obtain at least 12 credits in language modules.
Departmental Offerings
Various departments offer specific modules, including the Department of English, Department of Afrikaans, Department of African Languages, and the Department of Modern European Languages, each with their unique set of modules tailored to language proficiency and cultural understanding.
Minimum Credits
Students must complete a minimum of 138 credits for the first year, 120 credits for the second year, and specific credits for the third year, depending on the chosen discipline and modules.

In the third year, students select one of the following disciplines and complete both semesters:
- YSP 310: Psycho-social Issues in Sport and YSP 320: Theoretical Frameworks in Sports and Exercise Psychology
