Programme Overview
The BA Audiology programme is a four-year degree package designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge of the hearing process, causes and symptomatology of hearing and vestibular difficulties, and the scientific basis of intervention. The programme includes applied competence such as practical skills to improve or enhance the aural, vestibular, and/or communication abilities of individuals with hearing or vestibular disabilities.
Programme Information
The purpose of this programme is to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work with individuals with hearing and vestibular disorders. The programme covers various aspects of audiology, including the basic audiometric test battery, amplification systems, and aural rehabilitation. Students will also learn about the principles of audiological screening, assessment, and intervention.
Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- A certificate deemed equivalent to the required Grade 12 certificate with university endorsement
- A graduate from another tertiary institution or granted the status of a graduate of such an institution
- A graduate of another faculty at the University of Pretoria
- An APS of at least 32 in Grade 12
- Life Orientation is excluded when calculating the APS
- Minimum requirements for achievement levels and APS scores are as follows:
- Any two languages (one of which must be Afrikaans or English): 5 (NSC/IEB), 3 (HIGCSE), C (AS-Level), C (A-Level)
- Mathematics: 4 (NSC/IEB), 3 (HIGCSE), D (AS-Level), D (A-Level)
- Total APS: 32
Additional Requirements
Departmental selection takes place, and practising audologists should have good speech production and language use to serve as a model for individuals with vestibular and hearing disorders. They should also have good hearing, vision, and motor ability to assess and treat individuals with various vestibular disorders.

Minimum Credits
The minimum credits required for each year of study are:
- Year 1: 114 credits
- Year 2: 129 credits
- Year 3: 143 credits
- Year 4: 115 credits
Pass with Distinction
To pass the degree with distinction, a student must obtain:
- A final mark of 70% or higher for all modules of the final year
- An average of 75% or higher for the Audiology modules at fourth-year level
- A final mark of 75% or higher for one of the theoretical modules, ODL 410 or ODL 420
