Program Overview

Doctoral Program

The University of Lille offers a doctoral program that allows students to pursue their research interests in a supportive and stimulating environment. The program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to work with experienced researchers and to develop their skills and knowledge in their chosen field.

Being a Doctoral Student

A doctoral student is a young researcher in the process of formation. They develop a doctoral project supervised by a thesis director and organized by a doctoral school. The doctoral student learns research by doing research, which means they acquire professional experience within a research unit. After completing their research work and writing their thesis, the doctoral student presents their original scientific work during a defense in front of a jury. The doctoral student is the sole author of their manuscript, which is subject to a legal deposit.

Doctoral Funding

The University of Lille offers doctoral contracts that are funding awarded to pairs (subject, candidate) proposed by candidates and/or laboratories and validated by the doctoral schools. Some contracts may combine funding from the University, the Hauts-de-France Region, the I-Site ULNE, the ADEME, the CNRS, Inria, the Inserm, collaborative ANR or European projects, etc. The salary is 1758 gross/month in 2018. Some doctoral students also arrive with their own funding in the form of scholarships from their country of origin. Additional activities may be offered to complement research activities, with an additional remuneration paid to contractual doctoral students.

Thesis in Enterprise

A thesis can be undertaken in collaboration between a laboratory and a company. This allows the doctoral student to be immersed in two worlds to carry out their research work. CIFRE conventions enable a research project to be carried out between the laboratory and a company. The doctoral student spends part of their time on each side.
