European Languages and Cultures

Master's Program

The European Languages and Cultures master's program trains students to be cultural mediators (translators, administrators, editors, etc.) by providing knowledge and skills in a modern or classical language and culture. Students can choose one of the following specialities:

• Classical philology
• English language and literature
• French language and literature
• German language and literature
• Russian and Slavic philology
• Scandinavian languages and literature
• Spanish language and literature

Curriculum

The curriculum consists of six modules. Students are recommended to spend one semester and complete 15 ECTS worth of coursework in a university where the language of the speciality is spoken as the first language.

Admission Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification
• English language proficiency
• Proficiency in the respective language of the chosen specialty (will be assessed during entrance exams)

Evaluation Criteria

Applications are evaluated based on:

1. The score of the motivation letter (yields 40% of the final score)
2. The score of the essay (yields 40% of the final score)
3. The admission interview (yields 20% of the final score)

Motivation Letter Requirements

The motivation letter is used to evaluate the applicant's motivation to study on the program. The motivation letter must be added to the online application by the application deadline.

Essay Requirements

The essay is a character text in which the student candidates discuss a problem related to the specialty. The essay is written in the language of the specialty.

Admission Interview

The oral exam in the chosen specialty is an interview in the language of the specialty.

How to Apply

1. Submitting the online application: The application system opens on 2 January and closes on 15 March.
2. Evaluation and announcement of admission results: The evaluation of applications will be made based on the electronic copies added to the application system.
3. Sending the documents by post and paying the tuition fee: Once the admission results have been announced, all admitted students are required to send the application documents by post to the university.
4. Receiving the official admission letter: The official admission letter will be sent to admitted students electronically via the application system.
5. Arriving in Estonia and at UT: Once the admission letter is issued, accepted students may proceed further with arranging their arrival.

Tuition Fee Reduction

In selected programs, the university offers tuition fee reductions of 25%, 50%, or 100% for one semester at a time. For this program, two admitted students will receive a 25% tuition fee reduction for their second semester, based on the weighted average grade of all results from the previous studied semester.
