Program Overview
Introduction to the International Master in Innovative Medicine (IMIM) Program
The International Master in Innovative Medicine (IMIM) is a joint Erasmus Mundus Master program coordinated by four partner universities: University of Groningen, Heidelberg University, Uppsala University, and University of Tartu. This two-year program (120 ECTS) is designed to provide students with multi- and interdisciplinary knowledge and skills in foundational research, clinical investigation, and commercial application of innovative technologies.
Program Objectives and Structure
The IMIM program aims to educate new specialists who can transfer existing and novel technologies from research laboratories to actual patients. The program also focuses on providing students with an overview of today's patients' needs to create new technologies to tackle them. The wide IMIM partners' network allows students to form connections between academia and industry, encouraging future cooperation.
Course Content and Research Opportunities
The program courses cover various topics, including:
- Bioengineering
- Disease processes
- Diagnostics
- Therapies
- Drug design
- Implementation of AI technologies in biomedicine
- Research methods Students also improve their skills during several research projects, undertaken either at a university or at a company.
The Bench to Bedside and Beyond (BBB) Module
The BBB module is a common learning module that prepares students for a future work environment that is international, inter- and multidisciplinary, and innovative. This module is divided into four courses:
- BBB1: Introduction to Translational Medicine
- BBB2: Patent Analysis and Innovation
- BBB3: Innovation & Entrepreneurship Training
- BBB4: Creating a Translational Product The BBB module also includes:
- Spring school in Heidelberg for networking and exchange of research opportunities
- Summer School in Industrial Perspectives of Innovative Medicine in Uppsala
- VentureLab Weekend at the Groningen University Together, this module leads to the writing of a PhD proposal or the creation of a startup business plan.
Program Duration and Mobility
The program is two years long, and students study in two different partner universities. The first year's studies are located in either Heidelberg, Groningen, Uppsala, or Tartu, depending on the student's prior knowledge and preferences. In the second year, students must change universities to either Groningen, Uppsala, or Tartu. Additionally, students have internship opportunities outside Europe in IMIM associate partner universities, such as Japan or Latin America.
Degree Awarded
After completing the program, students receive a Double Degree.
