Management Information Systems Module
The Management Information Systems module, coded as BU21009, is a 20-credit course offered by the School of Business, specifically within the discipline of Accounting and Finance. It is designed to provide students with an understanding of how organizations develop and implement strategy, including technological developments and ethical implications.
Module Overview
This module aims to introduce current thinking and developments in applying technology to all aspects of modern finance, particularly to Accounting Information Systems (AIS). Students will focus on the consequences of an organization's strategic decisions, including objectives, market position, technology development, and the methods of implementing and monitoring strategies.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, students will be able to:
- Define, describe, and evaluate organizational strategies, their implementation, monitoring, and likely consequences.
- Identify, discuss, and critically evaluate the role of the finance function in an organization and in the achievement of an organization's strategies, and how it is impacted by emerging technologies.
- Understand and analyze the operation of the various sub-systems of an AIS and assess how emerging technologies could influence its design and operation.
- Design and evaluate data management models and business process diagrams in the context of accounting practice.
- Analyze, design, set up, and operate a computerized AIS in accordance with internal and external needs.
- Manipulate and present data gathered from a variety of sources in a coherent manner and demonstrate the use of information and communication technologies.
- Show the ability to work independently and as part of a team and present work in a professional manner.
Assignments and Assessment
The assessment for this module includes:
- Class test 1 (20%): Examined on Sage Accounting software.
- Class test 2 (20%): Examined on Python programming.
- Written exam (60%).
Teaching Methods and Timetable
Students will learn through on-campus lecture sessions, tutorials, and computer lab sessions. A typical week consists of:
- 2 x one-hour lecture sessions.
- 1 x one-hour tutorial session.
- 1 x one-hour computer lab session. Learning materials are provided through videos, review notes, examples, and tutorial questions.
