What You Will Learn

In this module, students will explore contemporary and historical printmaking techniques through practical work in the print workshop. The learning objectives include:

• Learning one of four print workshop-based print process mediums
• Applying the specific print process medium to a self-chosen project theme
• Understanding the history of print and how print mediums are used today by contemporary artists
• Learning book binding techniques
• Documenting ongoing print workshop explorations
• Developing an understanding of printmaking through research and essay writing on a self-chosen print-based topic

Outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be able to:

• Understand print workshop best practices
• Make prints in their specific print process medium within a print workshop environment
• Produce a body of print work based on their self-chosen project theme
• Understand how to make a print edition
• Apply their printmaking knowledge to future creative projects

Assignments and Assessment

The assessment for this module includes:

• A body of resolved and supporting printmaking work
• A 1,200 1,500 word print-themed essay

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria are equally weighted at 20% for each of the following:

• Quality of resolved practical and written work
• Range and depth of research and developmental work shown in supporting material
• Engagement with aspects of history, theory, practice, and process evidenced through written work
• Evidence of imagination, ideas, and originality
• Appropriate use of materials and processes in the resolution of practical work

Teaching Methods and Timetable

Learning in this module is facilitated through making within the print workshop, introductions to print processes by technical staff, and module hours dedicated to researching essay-related print topics in the DJCAD library. Teaching methods include workshop demonstrations, lectures, tutorials, and print process training videos.
