Advanced Environmental Criminology Module

The Advanced Environmental Criminology module, coded as GE41008, is a comprehensive program designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles of criminology and its application to the physical and natural environment.


Module Overview

In this module, students will learn about the main theoretical concepts in criminological research, critically evaluating these concepts, especially in their social and political contexts. The module is divided into two halves: the first half focuses on introducing the key concepts, while the second half explores how criminology can reduce instances of crime and the risk of crime in both urban and natural environments.

By participating in this module, students will:


  • Learn about and critique a variety of theories and research approaches affiliated with environmental criminology
  • Evaluate research into environmental criminology and its application in urban and natural environments

By the end of the module, students will be able to:


  • Appreciate the different components of environmental criminology and how they developed in particular social and political contexts
  • Apply criminology theory and research to the movement of people, such as victims and offenders
  • Apply criminology theory and research to the spatial and geographic components of policing and surveillance
  • Apply criminology theory and research to issues of wildlife and environmental crime
  • Appreciate the value of, and ability to use, different kinds of evidence for understanding complex social issues
  • Work effectively in small groups and independently
