Program Overview
Introduction to the Narratives Module
The Narratives module, designated as DJ31053, is a Level 3 studio module for Illustration students. This module builds upon the skills acquired in Level 2, providing further insight into the commercial practice of illustration, with a focus on drawing and storytelling.
What You Will Learn
In this module, students will:
- Explore the practice of drawing and its role within visual storytelling
- Carry out research into project themes and draw to document observations and develop ideas
- Learn to challenge ideas and seek new perspectives
- Look at storytelling formats and compose narratives in response to visual or textual prompts
- Refine their handling of illustration-related tools, materials, and techniques
By the end of this module, students will be able to:
- Recognise the importance of drawing as a communication tool
- Utilise research to inform ideas and assist in solving creative problems
- Navigate the creative process and make more confident decisions
- Orchestrate a range of storytelling elements to construct single or sequential imagery

Assignments and Assessment
- The module assessment is based on coursework (100%).
- At the end of the module, students will submit a portfolio containing their project work, based on the module briefs as well as research and development work.
- This module does not include a final exam.
