Architectural Thesis Module

What You Will Learn

In this module, you will:


  • Use advanced research methods to plan appropriate design strategies for complex design tasks, demonstrating an understanding of current architectural knowledge.
  • Assess materials, processes, and techniques applicable to complex architectural designs and building construction, integrating these into detailed architectural designs.
  • Apply a comprehensive range of visual, oral, and written media to test, analyze, critically appraise, and explain design proposals.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:


  • Critically understand a specific subject area in relation to architectural design.
  • Structure a rigorous argument and produce original design work.
  • Show initiative and competence in setting objectives and defining design considerations through research.
  • Rely on personal time management and independent learning skills.

Assignments / Assessment

There are two components to assessment in this module:


  • A critically reflective portfolio, which is a pass/fail element that must be completed to a satisfactory standard to pass the module.
  • An architectural thesis, which is the graded element, comprising an exhibition and accompanying text (75%), supported by an initial research study completed in a group, contributing 25% of the overall individual grade.

Teaching Methods / Timetable

The module is studio-based, with studios normally meeting once per week for individual and group tutorials. Group field trips will be agreed upon with studio tutors where appropriate.
