Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the Three-Year Degree Course in Techniques of Medical Radiology for Imaging and Radiotherapy, candidates must possess a high school diploma or another degree obtained abroad that is considered suitable. Admission to the course is limited and requires an entrance exam consisting of a multiple-choice test. The number of students admitted is defined annually by a decree of the Ministry of Education, University, and Research (MIUR), taking into account the resources and teaching structures available, as well as the needs expressed by the Region and the Ministry of Health regarding the demand for the professional profile of reference for the class.
Role of the Medical Radiology Technician
The medical radiology technician plays a crucial role within the hospital and beyond, contributing to the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions through the use of advanced radiological equipment. Following national and international regulations, the technician ensures patient and staff safety during diagnostic imaging exams. They work in contact with the radiologist, professional nurse, and other health professionals.
Professional Internship
One of the distinctive features of this course is the opportunity to carry out an internship at two prestigious hospital facilities: the Bari Policlinico and the Giovanni XXIII Pediatric Hospital. This provides students with significant practical experience, allowing them to acquire specialized skills in both adult and pediatric assistance, through the execution of diagnostic investigations on outpatients, emergency patients, and hospitalized patients in elective and urgent regimes (including acute patients, intensive care, or during surgical interventions).
During the internship, students will have the opportunity to work on numerous technologically advanced radiological equipment, including CT scans (one of which is equipped with artificial intelligence), high-field magnetic resonance imaging (including one of the latest generation at 3 Tesla), digital telecommanded equipment for radiography, orthodontic and bone densitometry radiological equipment, numerous digital portable devices for radiography, angiographs, digital C-arms for intraoperative fluoroscopy, two PET scanners, and several scintigraphy equipment. This extensive "machine park" is fundamental for putting into practice the theoretical notions acquired during the course and for providing the student with the necessary experience to face the world of work.
Post-Graduation Opportunities
Graduates of the Degree Course in Techniques of Medical Radiology for Imaging and Radiotherapy can access a wide range of job opportunities. Professional outlets include employment in hospitals, private clinics, diagnostic centers, veterinary clinics, medical research centers, and health industries.
After acquiring the degree, in addition to the job market, it is possible to continue studies through the Master's Degree Course in "Sciences of Technical Health Professions Diagnostic" and/or through First-Level Masters, useful for specializing in one of the numerous sectors of medical imaging and radiotherapy. Furthermore, graduates can pursue an academic career or engage in research activities.
After graduation, and mandatory for the exercise of the profession, is the registration with the Order of Medical Radiology Technicians and Technical Health Professions, Rehabilitation, and Prevention. This registration constitutes a true quality guarantee and protection for the citizen/patient; it also allows the health professional to receive the necessary professional and legal protections, thanks to the subscription of an insurance policy, in addition to staying updated on legislative developments in the profession, training, and professional updating (ECM).
