Introduction to the Naturvetenskaplig Bastermin Program

The Naturvetenskaplig Bastermin program is designed for individuals who lack a technical or natural science background from high school or equivalent, providing them with the opportunity to complement their knowledge and gain eligibility for certain programs at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

Program Information

Description

The program focuses on natural science phenomena, studied in the field and explored through themes such as water, soil, life, food, and natural science in societal resource flows. Fundamental natural science areas within biology, physics, chemistry, and mathematics are introduced in connection to these themes.

Structure

The program consists of several components:

• Biologi (4 weeks): Covers basic systematics, classification, evolutionary processes, interaction between biotic and abiotic systems, energy and material flows in biological systems and society, cell structure, and population dynamics.
• Fysik (3 weeks): Includes energy, work, effect, energy quality, efficiency, societal and natural energy flows, heat capacity, latent heat, entropy, force, uniform motion, acceleration, moment, pressure, capillarity, and osmosis.
• Kemi (6 weeks): Introduces atomic models, chemical bonding, formula writing and stoichiometry, equilibria (including pH and redox), thermodynamics (enthalpy, entropy, equilibrium constants), and organic chemistry.
• Matematik (6 weeks): Covers real numbers, scale transformations, equation solving and inequalities, roots, powers, logarithms, and trigonometry, as well as basics in probability theory and statistics.

Examination and Requirements

• The program requires participation in all obligatory course moments.
• Examination includes approved written and oral assignments.
• A passing grade is required for completion.

Admission and Eligibility

Requirements

For admission, students must have basic eligibility for higher education and specific eligibility in:

• Naturkunskap B
• Matematik C or equivalent.

Guarantees and Eligibility

Completion of the Naturvetenskaplig Bastermin program guarantees a place in the following SLU programs:

• Agronomprogrammet livsmedel
• Agronomprogrammet mark och växt
• Biologi och miljövetenskap kandidatprogram

It also provides eligibility, but not a guaranteed place, for:

• Agronomprogrammet djur
• Etologi och djurskydd
