Animal welfare at slaughter under EC 1099/2009
Program Overview
Animal Welfare at Slaughter under EC 1099/2009
The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) offers a program in animal welfare at slaughter, as required by EU Regulation EC 1099/2009. This regulation necessitates proof of competence for slaughterhouse staff, and SLU is approved by the Swedish Board of Agriculture as an organizer of training and final tests for certificates of competence.
Content
With support from the Swedish Board of Agriculture, SLU has developed an open educational resource (OER) called DISA, which stands for "animal welfare at the time of slaughter and other types of killing." The material is available in Swedish and English. SLU's course is based on DISA and is offered in two different formats: solely online or combined with two meetings at SLU in Skara. The course includes a final quiz to be eligible for a certificate of competence.
Distance Learning
- The distance learning course costs 4,900 SEK (excluding VAT).
- The DISA modules are complemented by web support on SLU's training platform, including recorded lectures, current documents, links, information, and practice questions before the final quiz.
- The training includes a theoretical final quiz consisting of multiple-choice questions regarding current species of animals.
- For animal welfare officers, the test is more extensive.
- The final quiz can be arranged at SLU in Skara or at the facilities if the animal welfare responsible staff can act as a test guard.
Final Quiz
- The final quiz costs 2,900 SEK (excluding VAT).
- Approved trainers (by the Swedish Board of Agriculture) can apply for the final quiz.
- Persons who already have proof of competence can apply for the final quiz for supplementing species, providing a copy of the certificate of competence.
Requiz
- If a participant does not pass the final quiz, there is the possibility to requiz for 1,900 SEK (excluding VAT).
Two-Meet Training
- The two-meet training includes the DISA modules complemented by web support and two meetings at SLU in Skara.
- The meetings are arranged as workshops with room for questions and discussions.
- The course is primarily intended for animal welfare staff.
- First meeting: Handling of animals at slaughter, introduction to the DISA modules, study guidance, and pedagogical support.
- Second meeting: Collection, discussion, questions, and the new regulations, ending with a final quiz.
- The price includes distributed material, lunch, and coffee at both meetings and final exams.
Certificate of Competence
- After passing the final quiz, a course diploma is issued, which must be attached to the application for a certificate of competence from the Swedish Board of Agriculture.
