Introduction to Mines Capstone Design

The Mines Capstone Design program provides a unique opportunity for Mines students to collaborate with the community and industry to solve engineering projects with creativity and ingenuity. Each semester, students go beyond the textbook to solve open-ended, experiential design problems sponsored by various organizations.

Program Overview

The program supports students with both Cornerstone and Capstone projects. Capstone projects are completed over two semesters, allowing for greater depth and longer-term engagement with the client. Small teams of 3-6 students in their senior year work on complicated, multi-faceted projects that require thorough analysis and design work. These projects include multi-disciplinary teams from various engineering disciplines, including:

  • Civil engineering
  • Environmental engineering
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Design engineering

Program Details

The program is designed to provide students with real-world experience and the opportunity to work on projects that have a significant impact on the community and industry. The program is open to students in their senior year, and projects are sponsored by various organizations, including industry, community, non-profit, government, and other entities.

Volunteer Opportunities

The program relies on volunteer judges to support projects throughout the year. Volunteers can participate in various opportunities, including judging project showcases and providing feedback to students.
