Introduction to the Advanced Certificate in Work-Based Learning
The Advanced Certificate in Work-Based Learning Extension program is offered by Hofstra University's School of Education to teachers and eligible candidates working with students. The program focuses on providing structured learning experiences for students to develop broad, transferable skills for postsecondary education and the workplace.
Program Overview
This Advanced Certificate leads to a Career and Technical Teacher Extension, Coordinator of Work-Based Learning. The certification extension enables teachers to place students in various work-based learning activities, such as career exploration, internships, cooperative work experience, and community-based work experience programs.
Eligibility
Valid base certificates for this extension include:
- Valid Initial, Professional, or Permanent teacher certificate in any title in middle childhood education (grades 5-9), adolescence education (grades 7-12), or All Grade levels.
- Valid Initial, Provisional, Professional, or Permanent School Counselor certificate.
Program Structure
The program is fully online and asynchronous, consisting of two courses:
- SED 211 Work Based Learning: Organization and Structure
- SED 212 Work Based Learning: Operation and Supervision
SED 211 Work Based Learning: Organization and Structure
This course enables educators to develop competencies essential for service as a coordinator of work-based learning programs. It addresses aspects of work-based learning education necessary for the establishment of programs for approval by the State Education Department.
SED 212 Work Based Learning: Operation and Supervision
This course enables educators to master the knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and supervising a Work-Based Learning program. The emphasis is on competencies essential in organizing various work-based learning programs.
New York State Certification
Successful completion of the two online courses and graduation from the Advanced Certificate program leads to an institutional recommendation for the Career And Technical Teacher Extension - Coordinator Of Work-Based Learning Programs Extension.
Admissions Requirements
Applications for admission are made to the Graduate Admission Office, based on a comprehensive review of multiple criteria. Applicants must:
- Hold a valid provisional, permanent, initial, or professional certificate for classroom teaching service or school counseling.
- Submit a completed application.
- Have earned a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on all undergraduate course work.
- Interview with a program director.
