The Public Budgeting and Financial Management Certificate is designed for individuals with some experience in budgeting and financial management. The program offers courses in an eight-week executive format, allowing students to balance their studies with their schedules.


Admission Requirements

Successful applicants typically have:


  • Completed a U.S. government course and a finite math course (usually basic statistics) in their undergraduate studies
  • Achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • The GRE is not required for admission

Application Process

Letters of Recommendation

  • Pre-career applicants (those without two years of professional public sector experience) must submit one professional and two academic letters of recommendation
  • Mid-career applicants must submit three letters, with one academic letter preferred

The written statement of purpose is a short essay (1000-word maximum) that explains:


  • Why the applicant has decided to pursue a certificate in public budgeting and financial management
  • The reason for choosing the NIU certificate program
  • How completing a certificate will enhance the applicant's career goals
  • Any experience the applicant has working or volunteering in public and/or nonprofit organizations

International Students
