Program Overview

The university program offers a professional educator license (PEL) with a primary endorsement in the area of study, allowing students to teach advanced classes in that subject, as well as regular-level science classes. Students are recommended to earn an additional endorsement in another area, enabling them to teach advanced classes in that discipline.


Additional Endorsements

To obtain an additional endorsement, students must complete 12 hours of coursework in another area and pass the state content test for that subject. The recommended courses for each area are:


  • Biology
    • BIOS 208 Fundamentals of Biology I, including lab (4 hours)
    • BIOS 209 Fundamentals of Biology II, including lab (4 hours)
    • BIOS 316 General Ecology (4 hours)
  • Chemistry
    • CHEM 210/212 General Chemistry I, including lab (4 hours)
    • CHEM 211/213 General Chemistry II, including lab (4 hours)
    • CHEM 330 or 336 Organic Chemistry I (3 hours)
    • CHEM 332 Organic Chemistry I lab (1 hour)
  • Earth and Space Science
    • GEOL 120/121 Introductory Geology and lab (4 hours)
    • GEOG 105/106 Introduction to the Atmosphere and lab (4 hours)
    • PHYS 162 Introduction to Astronomy (3 hours)
    • GEOL 494 Special Topics (1 hour)
  • Environmental Science
    • ENVS 301 Environmental Science I: Physical Systems (3 hours)
    • ENVS 302 Environmental Science II: Biological Systems (3 hours)
    • Two of the following: ENVS 303, 304 or 305 (6 hours total)
  • Physics
    • Option One:
      • PHYS 253 Fundamentals of Physics I: Mechanics (4 hours)
