Dietetic Internship Program
The Dietetic Internship Program (DI) provides the opportunity to develop skills in the areas of medical nutrition therapy, food service management, life-cycle nutrition, and community nutrition with a concentration in Community Nutrition and Health Promotion. In this program, students will also work to earn a master of science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics.
Program Highlights
- Designed for simultaneous completion of both the Dietetic Internship (DI) and M.S. degree in Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Opportunity to apply for a Graduate Assistantship (GA) which provides both a partial tuition waiver and monetary stipend.
- Students will work with approximately 12 community sites during the internship, including medical clinics, school nutrition programs, wellness and health promotion sites, diabetes education, and business sites throughout northern Illinois.
- The program boasts a 100% one-year pass rate for the Registration Exam for Registered Dietitians over the past five years.
- Highlights study in current issues, with the option for a Certificate of Graduate Study in Eating Disorders and Obesity on a competitive basis.
Accreditation
The Dietetic Internship at Northern Illinois University is currently granted accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Education of Nutrition and Dietetics of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The program is located in northern Illinois, providing access to a diverse range of practice settings from the DeKalb and Rockford area to the surrounding suburbs and the larger metropolitan area of Chicago.
Curriculum
- The curriculum is designed to provide comprehensive training in medical nutrition therapy, food service management, life-cycle nutrition, and community nutrition.
- Students will participate in internships at various community sites, gaining hands-on experience in their field of study.
Certificates
- A Certificate of Graduate Study in Eating Disorders and Obesity is available on a competitive basis.
- A Certificate of Graduate Study in Sports Nutrition is also offered, providing specialized knowledge in sports nutrition.
