Journalism BA Program

The Journalism BA program at the University of Leicester is a 3-4 year course that teaches core journalistic techniques and helps students develop skills to deliver effective content across multiple platforms.

Course Description

The program focuses on the core skills that produce good journalism on all news platforms. It covers key journalistic skills in news-gathering, interviewing, and features production, as well as the development of understanding of the context, ethics, and regulatory environment in which journalism operates.

Entry Requirements

• A/AS-levels: BBB, with all subjects accepted. Two AS-levels are considered in place of one A-level.
• EPQ with A-levels: BBC + EPQ at grade B.
• GCSE: English Language Grade 4/C.
• Access to HE Diploma: Pass diploma with 45 credits at Level 3, including 24 credits at Distinction.
• International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 28 points overall, including a minimum of grade 4 in English A or 5 in English B if a minimum of grade 4/C is not held at GCSE.
• BTEC Nationals: Full Diploma with DDM.
• T-Levels: Merit or above, with Humanities subjects preferred.

Fees and Funding

• UK Students: Ł9,790 in the first year, subject to Parliamentary approval.
• International Students: Ł20,200 per year.

Course Structure

The program consists of six modules per year, with a combination of practical workshops, lectures, seminars, and one-to-one supervision. The modules are assessed through a combination of portfolios, essays, exams, and presentations.

• Core modules: Digital and Social Media Journalism: Context and Practice (double module), Data Journalism.
• Option modules: Political Communication, Broadcast Journalism 2, Magazine Journalism, Journalism Perspectives, Introduction to Sports Journalism, Data Journalism, Journalism Studies.

Year Abroad (Optional)

Students can opt for a year abroad between Years 2 and 3, which provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience and skills in a global context.

Final Year Modules

• Core modules: Publishing Project 1, Publishing Project 2, Journalism Dissertation.
• Option modules: Journalism Placement, Investigative Journalism, Freelance and Entrepreneurial Journalism, Crime Journalism, Political Journalism, Space Journalism, Reporting Panics, Media, Rights and Responsibilities.
