Overview

The course aims to equip students with a critical understanding of the issues and theories that impact upon classroom practice in teaching, learning, and assessment of 11 to 16-year-olds. The taught part of the course is structured around three core modules: Education Studies I, Education Studies II, and Education Studies III.


Course Content

The course content includes:


  • Education Studies I: This module aims to enhance students' understanding of reflection as part of professional practice, considering particularly the concept of the 'Reflective Practitioner'.
  • Education Studies II: This module aims to develop a research proposal suitable for a small-scale enquiry, which demonstrates knowledge and understanding of appropriate ethical implications.
  • Education Studies III: The aims of this module are to develop critical knowledge and understanding of teaching methods as appropriate to the subject/phase of focus.
  • PGCE Secondary Education Teachers' Standards for Qualified Teachers Status: The main aim of this module is to ensure that the content, structure, delivery, and assessment of training enable student teachers to demonstrate that they meet the Teachers' Standards required for the Recommendation for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status [QTS].

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the course, applicants must have:


  • An undergraduate or postgraduate degree, normally a 2:2 classification or above.
  • Acceptable subjects are Mathematics, Mathematics and/or another subject, Accounting and Finance, or Economics and Finance.
  • English and Maths Grade 4 (C) or above, or equivalent at GCSE level.
  • An informed personal philosophy on the aims of secondary education, drawing on relevant reading and research.
  • Recent and relevant experience of secondary school education in England.

Teaching and Learning

Assessment and Feedback

The course carries 60 master's level credits and requires students to successfully complete three formally assessed pieces of academic work during the year, supported by a portfolio of evidence. Qualified Teacher Status is achieved by meeting the government's Teachers' Standards.


Location of Study

The course will be delivered at the Brunel University London campus, with school-based placements taking place in partnership schools in and around London.
