Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich
Welcome to Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München - the University in the heart of Munich. LMU is recognized as one of Europe's premier academic and research institutions. Since our founding in 1472, LMU has attracted inspired scholars and talented students from all over the world, keeping the University at the nexus of ideas that challenge and change our complex world.

Services

Student services

For international students wishing to complete full studies at LMU (degree students), the International Office is the first point of contact for applications, admissions, and enrollment.

To ensure that study visits are successful for as many international full-time students as possible, the International Office admissions department offers the following services: Support and advice for foreign prospective students before and during the application stage; Certificate inspection, admission, and registration; Study guidance and support for desired course changes; Campus orientation and information events; Help and mediation with authorities.

Housing services

It is very difficult to find housing in Munich, particularly at the beginning of the winter semester, in the months of September, October and November.

Given the high demand and low supply of student accommodation, the majority of the approximately 100,000 students in Munich live in private rooms, flat-shares or apartments. Only about 13% of students live in student residences.

Rooms in student housing is very reasonably priced and can cost between 250€ and 390€. Rental costs for private housing in Munich are high. Rooms in flat-shares and apartments easily cost between 450€ and 800€ (if not more) per calendar month, depending on the location and amenities.

Library services

The University Library pays licence fees for the majority of the electronic media available to LMU staff and students. You will need to authenticate yourself as a member of the LMU each time you begin a new browser session in order to access the University Library's electronic media.

Please authenticate yourself using the E-Media Login on the right-hand side of the University Library's home page.

ICT services

As a student, you’ll have internet access (with WiFi in all university buildings), an email address, and a personal webpage through LMU Munich. You will also have access to computer labs and other related services like printing, copying, scanning, etc. All services are either free or very inexpensive.

Medical services

Since 2009, the Center for International Health at the hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich offers a platform for all departments within the Medical Faculty of LMU and outside which are involved in international cooperation in medical research education. Our departments gathered experiences in transnational academic activities for decades.

Student Life

Campus life

The Munich Student Union (Studentenwerk) runs eight larger student cafeterias, called Mensen, and several smaller cafes. The Mensen are located at major university buildings throughout Munich. You can find reasonably priced lunches with various side dishes and always at least one vegetarian meal. The cafes sell snacks and drinks throughout the rest of the day.

The Munich Student Union runs a total of 33 cafeterias, StuBistros, StuCafés, and espresso bars, with detailed descriptions online. You can even peruse the daily menus online. There are an ever-increasing number of organic options, all for affordable prices.

Sports facilities

The university sports facilities are located on campus at the former site of the 1972 Summer Olympics, the Olympiapark. The 45-acre grounds—worth visiting for historical reasons—include, among other things, the Olympic swimming pool, Ice Sport Center, Olympic Tennis Complex, Socca Arena, and a golf practice facility.

By the way—the nearby Olympic Village (Olympisches Dorf), with its colorful bungalows constructed for the Olympic games, today serves as student housing!

Student clubs

Since you’re starting out in a new school, city, and country (!), it’s the perfect time to make new friends. And whether you’re outgoing or more of the quiet type, there’s a group for you here at LMU Munich. There are activities on campus and off, with lots of opportunities to get to know new cultures, people, and this beautiful region.
