In 1871, after the Meiji Restoration, Nagoya Prefecture (formerly the Nagoya Domain), under the guidance of Keisuke Ito and other pioneers from the Nagoya Domain's Smallpox Vaccination Clinic, established the Temporary Hospital and School, which is said to have been the forerunner of today's Nagoya University, to spread Western medicine and cultivate medical practitioners.

Student services

Nagoya University has established the Center for Student Counseling to strengthen its counseling system for Japanese and international students, by providing general consultation as well as mental health and career counseling, and to ensure that students have a rewarding university life.

Housing services

There are six Nagoya University residences available to international research fellows: International Residence Higashiyama, Researchers Village HIGASHIYAMA, Noyori Conference Hall, Idaka-cho Residence, Researchers Village DAIKO, and Researchers Village YAKUMO.

Library services

The University Libraries, consisting of the Central Library, Medical Library, and libraries in each school/graduate school.

In recent years, to keep up with globalization and the evolution of information, the University Libraries have started providing a variety of academic information in digital formats, including e-books, databases and electronic journals.

Medical services

The Research Center of Health, Physical Fitness and Sports was established in 1975 by merging the Department of Health and Physical Education of the College of General Education with the Health Administration Center. The missions of this center are to conduct scientific research on sports and health, to provide health care and education of students and staff.
