Program Overview
Dental Medicine DMD
The Dental Medicine DMD program is a vibrant and growing field that aims to improve the quality of life for others. Once admitted as a pre-doctoral dental student, individuals will find themselves among faculty and students who encourage success every step of the way. The program offers an environment that embraces collaboration, creativity, diversity, and professionalism.
Program Overview
The program is a four-year commitment, with the first three years spent attending classes, labs, and clinics in Ledyard E. Ross Hall, the School of Dental Medicine's state-of-the-art building on ECU's Health Sciences Campus. Ross Hall features the latest in educational technology, patient care simulation, patient care clinics, and video teleconferencing.
Curriculum
During the first three years, students will gain an in-depth understanding of the connection between oral health and overall well-being. The study integrates classroom experience, group problem-solving via collaborative networking, acquiring clinical skills, and beginning clinical practice of dental medicine. Students will have boundless opportunities for involvement in community service and outreach.
Clinical Experience
In the second year, students will begin the clinical phase of their education, gaining hands-on experience providing care for patients from the surrounding area. Throughout the third year, students will continue to develop their patient care skills and learn how to be a leader of the dental team.
Fourth Year
During the fourth year, students will have the opportunity to provide patient care as they work alongside dental faculty, residents, and other professionals in community service learning centers across North Carolina. Students will also learn more about the communities where they will be working and how to effectively manage a dental practice.
ECU Advantage
The School of Dental Medicine is at the forefront of improving the health and quality of life of all North Carolinians. The school offers state-of-the-art facilities on campus and the experience of treating patients in community-based dental centers in rural areas across the state. The program has been named an Apple Distinguished Program due to its innovative implementation of technology in all aspects of education.
Community Involvement
As a student, individuals will play an integral role in improving oral health in North Carolina. They will have the opportunity to reach out to communities, promote oral health, and encourage younger people to consider dental medicine as a profession. The program emphasizes collaboration for best patient outcomes, and students will find an environment that supports their success and growth as future dental professionals.
