Program Overview

Middle Grades Education BS

The Bachelor of Science in middle grades education program at East Carolina University is designed for individuals who have a passion for a subject area and wish to share it with adolescents. This program allows students to develop expertise in two preferred areas of the curriculum (math, science, history, or English/language arts) and receive teacher licensure in grades 69.

About the Program

As a student in the middle grades program, you will receive individualized attention from expert faculty as you work toward your degree. The program is offered through a blend of online and face-to-face settings, culminating in a yearlong internship placement in a middle grades classroom. In the first semester, you will spend one day a week in your placement, getting to know the students, teaching lessons, and collaborating with the teacher. In the second semester, you will attend your internship every day, gradually taking on teaching responsibilities until you are teaching full-time. As a student intern, you will have the support of ECU faculty, the classroom teacher, and a university supervisor as you complete program requirements and prepare to enter the workforce.

Program Requirements

• A minimum GPA of 2.7 is required for admission to the program.
• Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7.
• A minimum grade of C (2.0) is required in each of the professional studies and specialty area courses for middle grades licensure.
• The degree requires a minimum of 120 semester hours, including:
  • General education requirements: 40 semester hours
  • Professional studies: 27-28 semester hours
  • Specialty area: 17 semester hours
  • Academic concentration: 32-48 semester hours
  • Electives to complete requirements for graduation
