Grants: Proposals, Processes, and People

The Grants Series offers various sessions to support faculty in their research endeavors. These sessions cover a range of topics, including grant writing, finding funding opportunities, and managing research data.


Session Details

  • Getting the Word Out: Using Social Media to Maximize Your Research Impact: This session focuses on using social media to increase the visibility of research, foster new collaborations, and explore funding opportunities.
  • Finding Funding Opportunities using Grant Databases: Attendees learn how to use the SPIN funding database to search for funding opportunities and set up custom searches and funding alerts.
  • A Rhetorical Approach to Grant Writing: This workshop explores strategies for understanding the target audience and crafting a persuasive grant proposal.
  • Getting the Word Out: Using LinkedIn to Maximize Your Research Impact: Practical tips are shared on using LinkedIn to highlight research, connect with collaborators, and attract potential funding opportunities.
  • IPAR portals – Information Helpful for Grant Planning: This session explores sources of data useful for grant proposals and outlines the process for requesting data not available in existing reports or dashboards.
  • Writing Data Management Plans: Tools and resources are introduced for drafting and revising data management plans, including funders' templates and boilerplate language.
  • IRB: Overview of ECU Resources and Processes: An overview of ECU's IRB supports and processes, including types of permissions and review processes.
  • IACUC: Overview of ECU Resources and Processes: This session covers ECU's IACUC supports and processes for research involving animals.
  • Project Budget Building Fundamentals: Best practices and helpful tips are shared for developing grant budgets, including compliance with sponsor parameters and ECU's budgeting policies.
  • Getting the Word Out: Using Videos to Maximize Your Research Impact: Strategies are discussed for creating compelling, professional content to strengthen research communication on social media.
  • Department Chairs: Introduction to eTRACS and Proposal Reviews: Guidance is provided on using the eTRACS platform for proposal and award information, including navigation, search functions, and best practices for proposal submission review.
  • The Beginning Beginning: An introduction to grantsmanship at ECU and beyond, covering lingo, processes, and cultures related to different funding agencies.
  • Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program Application Information Session: Information is provided on applying for the Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program, which supports scholarship and research in the social sciences and humanities.
  • Current and Hot Topics for Post-Award Management: Updates, emerging guidelines, and hot topics related to grant management and regulations at ECU and with various funders are discussed.
  • Reading Requests for Proposals and Application Guidelines: The importance of adhering to RFP and sponsor guidelines is emphasized, with tips on how to guide a successful proposal.
  • Make Your Case for Support to Corporations and Foundations: A roadmap is shared for building a project idea into a fundable concept and telling a compelling story for potential corporate and foundation funding sources.
  • Dissertation Funding Opportunities for Doctoral Students: An introduction to dissertation funding opportunities for doctoral-level students, particularly relevant for PhD and EdD students.

  • SciENcv: Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae: An overview of creating a biosketch in SciENcv, required by NSF and increasingly by NIH and USDA, with a focus on the development process.
  • Finding Funding Opportunities using Grant Databases: Introduction to tools for searching funding opportunities, focusing on the SPIN funding database and setting up custom searches and funding alerts.
  • All About Effort: Proposing the appropriate amount of effort on a grant application: Guidance on calculating effort (time) allocated to sponsored projects, with practical tips and an overview of the effort policy.
  • NIH-approved Generalist Repositories—Workshop on Open Science Framework & Dataverse: A hands-on workshop introducing the key features of Open Science Framework (OSF) and Dataverse, including creating project spaces, uploading data, and sharing projects.
  • Proposal Details that Matter: Quick overviews of critical items to consider when developing a proposal, including indirect costs, effort reporting, and the campus approval process.
  • Collaboration in Research: Discussion on setting up successful collaborations, including authorship, roles on grant proposals, and avoiding and resolving disputes and conflicts.
