Linguistic Justice Canvas Module
The Linguistic Justice Canvas Module is a consultant-led, semester-long professional development activity that aims to educate the campus community on linguistic justice and its role in student success. The module is broken down into two sections: a student section and an educator section.
Student Section
The student section presents four sections for students to work through:
- Introduction to linguistic justice, explaining what it is and how it relates to linguistic bias
- Connection between linguistic justice and identity, demonstrating the importance of both and encouraging students to consider their own relationship with their dialects
- Advocating for linguistic justice in the classroom, providing additional resources that stress the importance of identity and linguistic choice
- Additional resources that cover a variety of linguistic justice concepts to broaden students' knowledge and understanding further
Educator Section
The educator section also presents four sections for educators to work through:
- Introduction to linguistic justice and linguistic bias, and how it is important within academia
- Linguistic justice in the classroom, introducing, defining, and illustrating the importance of linguistic justice syllabus statements
- Linguistic justice practices in the classroom, discussing the need for deemphasizing traditional grammar instruction, incorporating linguistically inclusive practices into assignment guidelines, and reflecting on future student writing feedback
- Additional resources and research for educators, allowing them to share their own resources and research that may not have been presented in the modules
The Linguistic Justice Canvas Module is one way consultants share their experiential knowledge with the campus community, working toward creating inclusive writing practices in and out of the classroom.
