Public Health Foundations and Practice Certificate
Program Overview
Department of Public Health
The Department of Public Health offers various programs, including the Master of Public Health (MPH) and the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH).
MPH Program
The MPH program has several concentrations and requires the completion of core curriculum courses. The program also includes an Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) and an Applied Practice Experience (APE).
DrPH Program
The DrPH program is designed for individuals who want to become leaders in public health. The program has several handbooks, including the DrPH EOH Handbook and the DrPH HPAL Handbook, which provide detailed information about the program.
Certificates
The department offers several certificate programs, including:
- Biostatistics Certificate Program
- Ethnic & Rural Health Disparities
- Public Health Foundations & Practice Certificate
Public Health Foundations and Practice Certificate
The Public Health Foundations and Practice Certificate program requires the completion of 4 out of 5 required courses:
- BIOS 7021 – Biostatistics for Health Professionals I (3 SH)
- MPH 6034 – Foundations of Rural Health (1 SH)
- MPH 6041 – Principles of Epidemiology (2 SH)
- MPH 6042 – Public Health Organization and Administration (3 SH)
- MPH 6043 – Public Health Planning and Evaluation (3 SH)
Requirements for the Public Health Foundations and Practice Certificate
To complete the certificate program, students must:
- Complete 4 of the 5 required courses.
- Apply for graduation.
- Contact the Program Director to inform them of their plan to graduate.
- Complete the remaining 1 course needed for a total of 12 credit hours.
- Apply to the MPH program, if desired.
Additional Requirements and Information
- A student earning a "C" in any course as part of the Certificate must petition the Department of Public Health for probationary continuation and may be required to repeat the course.
- Students enrolled in the PHFP Certificate cannot take other MPH courses outside of the Certificate and apply them later towards the MPH degree.
- Students enrolled in the PHFP Certificate should consult with the Program Director for all academic advising.
