Program Overview


Introduction to the Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program

The Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program is affiliated with the East Carolina University Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, located at the Brody School of Medicine in Greenville, North Carolina. The program is based at ECU Health Medical Center, a community hospital serving Pitt and nearby Greene Counties, with a population of approximately 130,000 people.


Program Overview

ECU Health Medical Center is a tertiary hospital with 745 beds, including 80 beds in the Ob/Gyn area. It serves as the tertiary referral center for 29 eastern North Carolina counties, with a population base of approximately 1.3 million people. The hospital has a birthing center and performs approximately 3000 deliveries per year.


Facilities and Equipment

The hospital is well-equipped to care for tertiary patients in all categories, with a range of facilities, including:


  • A 55-bed regional rehabilitation center
  • A 35-bed neonatal intensive and intermediate care unit
  • A 52-bed psychiatric unit
  • Critical care services, including 24 medical intensive care beds and 24 surgical intensive care beds
  • A 36-bed pediatric unit with a separate critical care unit for children

Clinical Experience

The program offers a wide range of clinical experiences, including:


  • General Ob/Gyn and subspecialty clinics in the medical school outpatient facilities
  • A large, regional, high-risk obstetrical clinic
  • Opportunities for longitudinal continuity of care for both obstetric and gynecologic patients over the four-year training program
  • Subspecialty clinics in colposcopy, laser, infertility, and urodynamic testing

Subspecialties

The program includes several subspecialties, such as:


  • Gynecologic Oncology, established in July 1986 and housed in the Leo W. Jenkins Cancer Center
  • Radiation Oncology, with a range of linear accelerators
  • An active genetics program, coupled with state-of-the-art ultrasound systems and full-time technicians

Education and Training

The program provides in-depth ambulatory experiences and hands-on training in various subspecialties, preparing residents for a wide range of patient populations and advanced equipment. The Division of Gynecologic Oncology and other subspecialties offer up-to-date and hands-on experience, enhancing resident education in the outpatient area.
