Program Overview
Education for Social Justice Framework
The Education for Social Justice Framework is a values-led framework that combines principles of inclusive pedagogy with a values-based vision of a curriculum that reflects the mission of London Metropolitan University. The framework is designed to address the issue of differential outcomes between student groups at key points in the lifecycle, including continuation, degree award, and graduate destinations.
Introduction to the Framework
The framework is inspired by the success of an inclusive curriculum framework at other diverse institutions and has been crafted by a group of 30 staff, students, and the Students' Union. It is based on the principles of inclusive pedagogy, as outlined in the 2015 Mountford-Zimdars et al HEFCE publication, and is designed to align with the mission of London Met.
Key Components of the Framework
- Inclusive Behaviours Programme: a workshop series that explores equality essentials, bullying and harassment, developing EDI literacy, cultural awareness, bias, discrimination and racism, white privilege, anti-oppression and anti-racism, allyship, intersectionality, and microaggressions.
- Data Familiarisation Training: exploring the Value Added score and fair outcomes data.
- Education for Social Justice pedagogy: a series of workshops focusing on enhancing teaching practice in each aspect of the Framework.
- Student Curriculum Partners Programme: a new programme that enhances the voice of the diverse student cohort in the creation and delivery of the academic offer.
Ambitions of the Framework
The framework aims to focus pedagogy on a wider purpose, moving away from a deficit or banking model of education, and instead undertaking an unlearning and relearning of the world, reimagining an equitable future together in partnership with students. Social justice, compassion, and inclusion will be the golden threads that are woven into pedagogy and student experience.
Implementation and Support
To support the implementation of the framework, a comprehensive training programme for all staff at the University has been introduced. The training is coordinated by the University's Centre for Professional and Educational Development and consists of three stages: Inclusive Behaviours Programme, Data Familiarisation Training, and Education for Social Justice pedagogy.
