Program Overview


MSc in Data Analytics

The MSc in Data Analytics programme is designed to provide graduates with essential research and development skills in Data Analytics. The overall goal of the programme is to equip graduates with the ability to perform independent research, make informed and critical decisions, and provide insight, gain value, and discover knowledge from data.


Course Description

The programme seeks to produce graduates who are well-equipped to work in the emerging data analytics market, increasing their employment potential. The course is suitable for graduates with technical or mathematical problem-solving skills, and those who can demonstrate an aptitude for technical or mathematical problem-solving.


Course Content

The course consists of the following core modules:


  • Statistics and Optimisation
  • Analytics Programming and Data Visualisation
  • Data Governance, Ethics and Sustainability
  • Business Intelligence and Business Analytics
  • Data mining and Machine Learning
  • Deep Learning and Generative AI

Elective choices include:


  • Data Intensive Scalable Systems
  • Modelling and Simulation
  • Domain Applications

A research elective is also available, with options including:


  • Research Practicum
  • Internship

Assessment

The course will be assessed with a blend of project work and exams, typically consisting of 50% continuous assessment and 50% exam.


Award and Progression

The Master of Science in Data Analytics is awarded by QQI at level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this course may progress to a major award at level 10 on the NFQ, or elect to exit early with the Postgraduate Diploma in Science in Data Analytics at level 9 on the NFQ.


Entry Requirements

A minimum of a level 8 (honours degree) qualification (2.2 or higher) on the National Framework of Qualifications is required. Applicants may be from a cognate/STEM background, with standard applicants holding computing or numerate degrees. All applicants must provide evidence of prior programming experience.


Non-English speaking applicants must demonstrate fluency in the English language, with an IELTS academic score of at least 6.0 or equivalent.


Laptop Requirements

Students are expected to participate in lectures, laboratories, and projects using a portable computer (laptop
otebook) with a substantial hardware configuration, including:


  • Processor: Intel 11th Gen or newer, Core i3 / i5 /i7 or Ultra 3 / 5 /7, or AMD 5000 Series or newer, Rzyen 3 / 5 /7
  • Random Access Memory (RAM): 16GB or greater
  • Storage: SSD (Solid State Drive) 256GB or greater
  • Wireless Card: 802.11 n/ac/ax capability
  • Recommended Operating Systems: Windows 11, later version of MAC OS

Indicative Schedule

The course typically takes place two evenings per week, 18:00-22:00, and every second Saturday, with exams potentially taking place during the daytime, evening, or weekends.


Course Delivery

The course is delivered in a blended format, with livestreaming and directed e-learning activities scheduled in advance.


Duration

The course runs over 2 years, consisting of 4 semesters with a final internship/research practicum.


Course Fee

The full course fee is 3,875 per year, with a Technology Ireland ICT Skillnet grant of 725 per year, resulting in a subsidised course fee of 3,150 per year. Part-funded fees are only available to eligible applicants working in private or commercial semi-state organisations in the Republic of Ireland.
