Nutrition is a vital component of human health. This four-week Fundamentals of Human Nutrition online course provides an introduction to this dynamic and exciting field.

You should have completed Science at Level 3 (eg A Level, Science Access Course or equivalent).

More about this course

This online nutrition course is designed for those who have studied science at A Level and are interested in learning about Nutritional Science. The course has been designed by our Dietetic and Nutrition academic team and is designed to meet the requirements of a 15 credit module at Level 5.

This course teaches you to:

  • describe the function and key sources of macro and micronutrients, and their relationship with human metabolism and the maintenance of good health
  • explain the concepts of balance and turnover, plus how energy and protein are conserved and utilised in metabolic pathways
  • discuss the role nutrition plays in obesity and other non-communicable diseases
  • On successful completion of the course you'll be issued with a course completion certificate.


    Assessment

    The course will be assessed by:

  • one scientific report
  • online multiple choice tests and other short online activities


  • Course structure

    This four-week online course will be delivered via Weblearn, the University’s virtual learning environment.

    You'll have access to a number of modules that have been specifically designed for this course, in which there will be a combination of lectures, exercises, online quizzes and suggestions for extra reading.

  • You can work at your own pace and access materials 24 hours a day.
  • The course materials will be available from 6am on the first Monday of the course and your assignments will be due in at 3pm on the final day of the course.
  • You should aim to spend the first two weeks of the course working through the modules, reading the online lectures, textbooks and papers, and undertaking the online activities and quizzes associated with each module.
  • In weeks three and four you'll complete a scientific report.
  • You should expect to spend between 18 and 37.5 hours per week on this course in order to successfully complete it.
  • You'll be encouraged to interact with other enrolled students and your course leader via online discussion forums and online activities. You'll have access to at least two live support sessions and a one-to-one assessment support session during normal working hours.

    During your course, you'll have access to the University library’s electronic books and journals, as well as study support services.

    The course will start on 21 June 2021.



    Where this course can take you

    This course has been designed to increase eligibility for our Dietetics and Nutrition PG Dip and Human Nutrition MSc courses, which lead to registration as a dietitian or nutritionist.

    Please note, this course does not qualify you to work as a nutritionist or dietitian and does not guarantee you a place on these postgraduate courses.
